The practice of riding in the space between cars (the so-called "corridor") is common in Brazil. Every motorcyclist traveling through major Brazilian cities rides daily in the corridor, where motorcycles ride to save time when traffic is at a standstill.
Although many think it is an infraction, experts warn that the movement of motorcycles in the corridor is not illegal. The Brazilian Traffic Code does not prohibit the circulation of motorcycles in the corridor. However, you need to take some precautions to ensure your safety and that of other drivers and pedestrians.
Today we're going to give you five tips for using the hallway correctly.
1 – Drive at low speed
In the hallway, the speed should be low. If traffic is stopped, drive at a maximum of 20 or 30 km/h. If the traffic flow is normal, the motorcyclist must ride at a speed slightly higher than the traffic, around 10 or 15 km/h more, and never beyond the limit established for the road.
2 – Don’t honk unnecessarily
Some motorcyclists tend to honk their horns non-stop when traveling in the corridor, with the excuse of wanting to warn drivers not to change lanes. It is important to remember that noise pollution is as harmful to human health as air pollution itself. Use the horn only when necessary, not continuously.
3 – Always turn on the headlights
Driving with your low beam headlights on during the day is one of the simplest and most appropriate procedures for ensuring safety.
4 – Always be attentive
To pass through a gap with vehicles moving in all directions, your concentration must be maximum.
Any unforeseen event – a car changing lanes or even a sudden brake on a motorcycle in front of you – will require all your skill, and the more focused you are on driving, the lower the risk of an accident.
The best attitude for running in the hallway is defensive. Get used to anticipating traffic movements.
5 – Have common sense
As in many other situations, you must be guided by common sense. Avoid taking “fines” from cars, respect pedestrian crossings. Do not stop them from crossing the streets and avenues with their vehicle.
Avoid arguing or swearing at drivers (who often change lanes without signaling). A car can cause much greater damage to a motorcyclist than the other way around.
